This practical guide outlines important questions for parents and carers to consider before commencing the toilet training process. Information is presented on the difficulties many children with autism, and/or developmental delay, experience with regard to toilet training. The manual places an emphasis on the importance of motivation to the development of new skills and shows parents how to establish a reinforcement system. Tips for determining patterns, looking at the impact of children’s diets, promoting generalisation, independence and training both the bowel and bladder are provided in the manual. The How to Guide for toilet training also provides examples of relevant visual supports and sample data collection forms.
